Amalgam fillings have been a controversial topic in the field of dentistry. Amalgam fillings (often called silver fillings) contain about fifty percent mercury.
Why Some Patients Want a Mercury-Free Dentist
Although mercury is toxic, it was previously thought that amalgam fillings don't release mercury into the body. Recent research, however, suggests that when you chew, a very small amount of mercury vapor is released from the fillings.
It is debated whether or not the mercury released is actually harmful to the body. There are no apparent adverse affects for most people who have amalgam fillings in their teeth. Neither has it been absolutely proven that harm has resulted from the mercury in amalgam fillings.
However, neither has it been proven that the mercury in the fillings is not harmful. Because of health concerns, many people prefer mercury-free fillings.
